How to Move a Hot Tub Without Damage

Moving a hot tub takes careful planning, the right equipment and at least four strong helpers. This guide covers each step, from draining and disconnecting to loading and transport, so your spa arrives safely at its new location.

Can you move a hot tub by yourself?

You can move a hot tub by yourself only if it is a small, lightweight plug-and-play model under about 900 pounds when empty. A standard acrylic spa holding six or more people weighs 800 to 1,200 pounds dry, and that weight shifts unpredictably on stairs and slopes. For anything that size, a DIY move without a crew and proper equipment usually damages the tub, your property or your back.

You need at least four able-bodied adults to move even a mid-sized hot tub. Two people cannot safely control a 7-foot acrylic shell if it tilts on a dolly or a ramp. The real danger is an incline or a narrow gate: a single person on the downhill side cannot stop a tub that starts to slide. Broken panels and cracked shells are the most common outcome, and those repairs often cost more than hiring a moving crew.

If you try it, you must have the right equipment. At a minimum you need a heavy-duty furniture dolly rated for 1,200 pounds, two 4-foot moving straps, furniture blankets and a trailer with a loading ramp. A spa dolly that supports the tub on its side is safer for navigating tight spaces, but renting one adds cost and requires you to know how to strap the tub correctly. Without those tools, you risk dropping the spa or twisting the frame, which voids most manufacturer warranties.

What equipment do you need to move a hot tub?

You need gear that can handle the weight and odd shape of a hot tub, which typically weighs 500 to 1,000 pounds when empty. The right tools prevent damage to the shell, your floors and the people lifting.

Professional moving crews show up with a full kit designed for this specific job. If you are doing it yourself, you will need to gather or rent each item ahead of moving day.

  • A heavy-duty four-wheel furniture dolly that can support the full footprint of the tub without tipping.
  • Moving straps or a lifting harness rated for at least 1,500 pounds, plus two or more strong helpers.
  • Sheets of three-quarter-inch plywood to create a smooth, protected path over grass, gravel or soft ground.
  • A flatbed trailer or truck with a powered liftgate; pushing a hot tub up a ramp by hand is risky and hard to control.
  • Thick moving blankets and stretch wrap to shield the acrylic shell from scratches during the shift onto the dolly.
  • A furniture dolly with a swivel function makes steering through doorways and around corners much easier.

Professionals also often bring a hot tub sled or a spa dolly with non-marring wheels, plus a winch for controlled loading. That equipment reduces the chance of a sudden shift that cracks the shell or strains someone’s back.

How to prepare a hot tub for moving

Preparation starts the moment you plan to relocate the spa, not on moving day. Shut off the dedicated circuit breaker at the main electrical panel and lock it out so no one restores power accidentally while you work. If the tub is gas-heated, close the gas supply valve and cap the line after the flex connector is detached by a licensed technician.

Drain the water completely through the built-in spout or a submersible pump, then disconnect the plumbing unions and the electrical whip from the control pack. Label every wire and fitting with masking tape and a marker. Blow out the jets and plumbing lines with a wet-dry vacuum set to exhaust to force out trapped water that would freeze or grow mold during storage. Dry the acrylic shell with microfiber towels and leave the cabinet door open for 24 hours so the foam insulation and equipment bay air out.

Clean the interior with a non-abrasive spa surface cleaner, then strap the cover down with locking clips or a ratchet strap so it cannot lift in transit. The order matters: cut power first, drain second, disconnect third, and clean and secure the cover last. This prevents electrical hazards and water damage to the motor, heater and circuit board.

  • Switch off the breaker and lock the panel, then disconnect the gas line with professional help if your model uses propane or natural gas.
  • Drain the tub fully and blow out residual water from the lines, jets and pump housing with a wet-dry vacuum.
  • Label every wire and plumbing connection before you unplug the control pack and loosen the unions.
  • Wipe the shell dry and leave the cabinet open for a full day so trapped moisture in the foam evaporates.
  • Clean the acrylic surface and lock the cover down tightly with ratchet straps or the factory clips.

How to lift and load a hot tub onto a trailer

To lift a hot tub onto a trailer, you need a team of four to six adults and a clear plan. Position two people on each side and one at each end. Tilt the tub onto its side slowly, making sure the weight stays on the bottom edge rather than twisting the shell. Once it rests on a furniture dolly, strap it to the dolly before rolling it toward the trailer.

The shell can crack if you tilt the tub too far onto its corner or let it drop onto a hard surface. Keep the angle shallow and the movement steady. At the trailer ramp, use a winch or at least two helpers pulling from above while the ground team pushes. A lift gate is safer than a ramp: it keeps the load level and reduces the sideways force on the acrylic.

Roll the dolly right up to the gate or ramp edge, then transfer the weight in one smooth motion. Never let the tub rest halfway on the ramp and halfway on the dolly, as the uneven pressure can snap the frame or crack the floor. Once the tub sits fully on the trailer bed, leave it strapped to the dolly until you are ready to secure it for transport.

How to secure a hot tub for transport

Once the hot tub is on the trailer or flatbed, secure it with at least four heavy-duty ratchet straps rated for its weight. Run two straps over the top from side to side and two more from front to back, crossing them if the trailer anchor points allow. Place moving blankets or foam padding under every strap where it touches the acrylic shell, because a bare strap will gouge the surface within the first few miles of travel.

Tighten the straps until the tub cannot shift, but stop before the shell begins to deform. Acrylic spas are not structural, so overtightening can crack the corners or stress the plumbing connections behind the shell. After driving for 10 to 15 minutes, pull over and recheck all straps, as the padding settles and the straps may need a slight adjustment.

Cover the entire tub with a heavy-duty tarp and tie it down separately so wind does not peel back the spa cover or send road debris into the shell. If the spa cover has locking clips, engage them, and add a strap across the cover as a backup.

When should you hire professional hot tub movers?

A crew with the right tools and experience turns a risky, backbreaking job into a routine two-hour one. You pay for the move, not for repairing a cracked shell, a crushed deck or a personal injury. The decision usually depends on the weight of the tub, the path it must travel and the distance to the new location.

Any spa that holds more than 350 gallons of water will weigh over 500 pounds dry. A typical six-person model is closer to 800 pounds. Once you add the awkward shape and a cabinet with no good handholds, you need at least four strong adults, a purpose-built dolly and a trailer with a low deck. Without them, the risk of dropping the tub is high, and the damage is never covered by a standard homeowner policy.

Call a professional team when any of these conditions apply:

  • The dry weight of the spa exceeds 500 pounds and you do not own a hot tub dolly rated for that load.
  • The move involves more than four steps, a steep slope or a gate narrower than 42 inches.
  • You are moving the tub to another city or across a state line, where highway securing rules and a trailer brake controller are required.
  • You do not have at least four able-bodied helpers available on the same day.
  • The only access to the backyard is through the house, and door trim or flooring must be temporarily removed.
  • The spa must be tilted on its side to clear an overhead obstruction, a maneuver that can crack the acrylic if the weight is not supported evenly.

FAQ

How many people does it take to move a hot tub?

You need at least four strong adults for a small two-person spa. Larger models that seat six or more often require six to eight people and specialized moving equipment to avoid injury and damage.

Can you move a hot tub on its side?

Yes. Most hot tubs are transported on their side on a heavy-duty dolly. You must drain it completely first and pad the side that rests on the dolly to protect the acrylic shell from cracking.

Do I need to disconnect the electrical before moving a hot tub?

Yes. A licensed electrician should disconnect the hardwired spa panel and any conduit before the move. Never attempt to move a hot tub while it is still connected to a power source.

What is the cheapest way to move a hot tub?

Renting a trailer and moving equipment and doing the work with friends costs the least cash. The trade-off is a higher risk of damage to the spa or your property, and potential injury if you lack experience with heavy loads.
